Exploitation

I hope there will come a time when the victims of sex abuse will no longer be exploited.  They have suffered enough.  The shrillness of all the rhetoric leading up to the Pope’s visit confirms one thing.  The sex abuse scandal is a tool used by some in the media and many who hate the Church for their own ends.  It is bad enough that the abuse was real and the response pathetic.  But, the self-righteousness of those who were not abused to use the abuse is damaging.  It is not damaging to the Church.  They would like it to be but reasonable people know that the abuse is in the past.  It took me awhile to see it.  But we are talking of 10, 20, 30, 40 year old cases seeing the first light of day.  The scandal is about past abuse.  The past abuse ushered in an era of more vigilance.  The constant drum beat is about something else all together.  And, in the end it is exploitive.

The advocacy groups want justice. This is important and I agree.  But, they can’t get all of what they want.  Lately, the call is for the releasing of files as if somehow there is a modern secret archive.  What did the Vatican know and when did they know it? is the question.  Let’s face facts.  The Vatican has always known that this is a potential problem.  It has always had perpetrators and this is known.  It appears although I don’t know this that the hierarchy saw these cases as isolated until the scandals of the late 90s and early 2000.  That European countries are now erupting shows that the Vatican has not put a “lid” on anything – the localities have.  And this is the issue.  The Vatican records are whatever is sent to the Vatican.  Why – think about it – do we think the Vatican is big brother with cameras in the bedroom?

Today’s readings are found here.  They are all important.  I like the Psalm but I picked the first reading.  It’s what is all about.   Even in 33 AD to preach resurrection would mean you would be seen as a fool.  How did such foolish words become so powerful if not true, if not historical fact.  Would you die for a lie you made up?  Are you that proud? Victims – people would not believe you – you have died a thousand deaths.  The truth is known.  You are now believed – will you be resurrected? or, will you allow others to continue to nail you to the cross?  And in truth, will we nail more innocents to the cross they so honorably and painfully bear?

Everyone –  Contemplate  and I hope you will pray as I do for healing for the victims, for society, societies and for the Pope.

1 Cor 15:12-20:

Brothers and sisters:
If Christ is preached as raised from the dead,
how can some among you say there is no resurrection of the dead?
If there is no resurrection of the dead,
then neither has Christ been raised.
And if Christ has not been raised, then empty too is our preaching;
empty, too, your faith.
Then we are also false witnesses to God,
because we testified against God that he raised Christ,
whom he did not raise if in fact the dead are not raised.
For if the dead are not raised, neither has Christ been raised,
and if Christ has not been raised, your faith is vain;
you are still in your sins.
Then those who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished.
If for this life only we have hoped in Christ,
we are the most pitiable people of all.

But now Christ has been raised from the dead,
the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep.
